The classic first VulnHub box. Old services, honest recon to root.
Kioptrix Level 1 is where a huge number of people cut their teeth. It is a small Linux VM running a handful of services that were already old when the box was built, which makes it a clean lesson in the loop that never changes: enumerate everything, read the version numbers, match one to a public , and use it. No trick puzzles, just discipline and attention to detail.
Your two objectives here: a foothold and read the user flag (user), then land a and read the root flag (root).
This VM runs entirely on your own hypervisor, on an isolated lab . That is what makes attacking it legal. Keep it off any network you do not .
VulnHub mirrors change over time. Open the entry linked in the setup panel, grab the current download, and verify the checksum if one is published before you import.
Work it yourself first. The hints are here when you are genuinely stuck, and each one costs points, so earn them.
Download the VulnHub image, import it into your hypervisor (UTM / VirtualBox / VMware), and boot it on a host-only or NAT network.
