“What is a port?” · “Why is my code erroring?”
A beginner VulnHub box that rewards full enumeration and a clean privesc chain.
Basic Pentesting 2 is the follow-up to the box that teaches everyone the loop, and it earns its easy rating by being fair, not by being small. It runs a real spread of services. The way in is not one clever trick. It is a single loose you only find because you enumerated everything, then a that chains one user into the next until you land on .
Your two objectives: a user and read user.txt (user), then escalate all the way to root and read root.txt (root).
This VM runs on your own hypervisor, on an isolated lab . That is what makes attacking it legal. Keep it off any network you do not , and never point these techniques at a machine that is not yours.
Bring-your-own-VM boxes like this one use proof revealed through the hints once you have genuinely completed the objective. Do the work, then submit the token. Phase B hosted machines will issue real per-instance flags planted on the target.
VulnHub mirrors change over time. Open the entry linked in the setup panel, grab the current .ova, and verify the published checksum before you import.
The trap on this box is stopping the port scan too early. The service that matters is not the first one you see. Scan all of it, read every version string, and the weak spot shows itself.
Work it yourself first. The hints are here when you are genuinely stuck, and each one costs points, so earn them.
Download the VulnHub image, import it into your hypervisor (UTM / VirtualBox / VMware), and boot it on a host-only or NAT network.
