A firewall attached to a cloud machine or service rather than to a network boundary. In AWS it holds allow rules only, and it is stateful, meaning a reply to an allowed request gets back out without its own rule. A group opening port 22 to 0.0.0.0/0 exposes SSH to the entire internet.
